9 Training Tips for Young Runners

Eimar, Niamh, Mia and James – P2P entrants from Narrabeen Lakes Public School

This year’s 25th Anniversary Pub2Pub marks the 5th consecutive year that Narrabeen Lakes Public School has entered… and they’ve already doubled the size of their 2016 Team!  The school’s better athletes are joining P.E. Teacher Nathan Casey in the 13km event, but younger students – even those in Year 2 and 3 – will be participating over the shorter 6km and 3km courses.

Two of the school’s gun athletes – Mia and James – have provided the following Tips for Young Runners in this year’s Pub2Pub:

  1. Go for a run regularly - several times each week
  2. Don't overdo it - run at a relaxed, leisurely pace
  3. Take time to rest as you go so you don't hurt yourself in any way
  4. Try and run on sand or grass, because that's easier on your joints (and your parents' joints too!) than running on hard surfaces
  5. Remember to eat healthy food as often as possible (with just the occasional treat)
  6. Drink lots of water while training and during the run
  7. It's good to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth
  8. It's also good to take long strides when you're running... this will result in so faster times
  9. Finally, don't forget to have lots of fun keeping fit and healthy!
