Catherine Michaels is running the Pub2Pub for a very good reason… she’s raising awareness and much needed funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.
In doing so, she’s also directly helping her daughter and niece – both diagnosed with this genetic disease that causes loss of muscle mass and progressive weakness. Catherine initially set herself a fundraising goal of $1,000 but has already trebled that target to hit $3,000. She’s currently the leading individual fundraiser entered in this year’s Pub2Pub.
Catherine recently told Manly Daily reporter Kat Adamski: “I really want to raise awareness of this disease as there’s still so much about it that remains unknown.
“The gene has to be carried by both partners to be inherited. Neither my sister nor myself had any idea we were carrying the gene until we had children with men (who were unrelated and in fact, came from different countries) who also carried the gene.”
So for Catherine, this Pub2Pub and the reason she’s running the main event from Dee Why to Newport is very personal. We wish her well on August 27 and all the very best in the future with her daughter and niece.
